Shield is a wall-mounted candleholder with an ivory-toned glaze and constellations of metallic dots formed in the firing. The gently curved backplate softly reflects the light.

The piece is finished using the Raku firing process, where oxidation and reduction unfold in succession. After reaching its firing temperature, the glowing ceramic is removed from the kiln and placed into a sealed container filled with combustible material. As oxygen disappears, reduction transforms both the glaze and the clay, producing surfaces that remain unique to each firing.
